El Hacho - The scout mountain
The view from El Hacho is breathtaking, over three countries, two continents and two seas, the surrounding mountain villages and the charming village of Gaucín, which lies at the foot of the Hacho.
It was not for nothing that this mountain was a strategically important vantage point, on which a guard stood at the time of the Moors and had the entire area in view. From up there he could send smoke signals to the castle that towers over the village when an enemy was approaching. The view extends over the Strait of Gibraltar to Africa and the mountain ranges in the hinterland.
The way up is steep but well prepared, taking our time and a little determination it is quite feasible, the reward is a wonderful view. From the top we continue over the ridge, between rocks and oaks on a circular path back down, through a cork forest back to the pretty village of Gaucín. Time for tapas in the village before heading back to the coast.
The drive from the coast to the village alone is beautiful and very interesting.
